Chapter Five
Mac heard the hotel room door open. He reached over and turned on the bedside lamp. “I was starting to worry.”
Chase dropped his suitcase before turning to lock the door. “My phone died, and I left the charger in the truck.” He pulled off his running shoes. “Are you mad at me?”
Stretched out on his back, Mac rested his clasped hands behind his head. “I hate that my truck got trashed, but I’m not mad about it.” He patted the bed beside him. “Let’s get some sleep.”
Chase groaned. “I’m going to jump into the shower first, but you don’t need to wait up for me.” He rubbed his hands over his face. “I just want this day to be over.”
Mac watched Chase disappear into the bathroom before turning off the light. He longed to step into the shower with the younger man and help him forget all about the previous few hours, but Chase had made it clear he wanted to be alone. He couldn’t blame Chase.
It had taken him years to gather the courage to break things off with Janice. Years of pretending to be what he wasn’t, of longing to be held by masculine arms instead of the thin, fine-boned arms of his wife. He huffed out a breath and rolled to his side.
When he’d received the call from Gwen, it had taken all his strength to do the right thing and let Chase handle the situation. His initial instinct was to make Benny pay for hurting Chase. The truck could be fixed, but he knew first-hand what words spoken in anger could do to a person.
It was a long while before the bathroom door opened again and the light switched off. Mac lay still until Chase climbed into bed and pressed against him. With a silent sigh of relief, Mac gathered Chase in his arms. “I’m here for you,” he reminded Chase.
Chase kissed Mac’s neck. “It was awful. I’ve never hurt someone so much in my life, and I never want to go through that again.”
Mac rubbed a hand up and down Chase’s back. “I know it was hard, but Benny’s just starting his adult life. It’s better that he start it with the truth.”
“I’m not so sure,” Chase mumbled.
Mac rolled to his back, pulling Chase with him. He waited until Chase’s head settled on his chest before speaking. “My dad was in a bike club, so as you can imagine, I was expected to grow up and join the club as well. Coming out to a man like that wasn’t possible, so I did my best to be the son he expected me to be. Janice, my ex-wife, was a good friend of mine in high school.” He took a deep breath. Few people knew his story because it wasn’t one he was particularly proud of. “I was experimenting with Skeet by then and knew I was one hundred per cent gay, but I also loved and respected my dad enough to keep it a secret.
